IELTS Writing task 2 – Equality

Nowadays both men and women spend a lot of money on beauty care. This was not so in the past. What may be the root cause of this behaviour? Discuss the reasons and possible results.

In today’s world, many men and women are spending a lot of money on beauty care, which is different from how things were in the past. This change can be explained by a few reasons and might lead to certain outcomes.

One big reason for this shift is the influence of media, especially social media. We often see pictures and videos showing people who look very perfect and beautiful. This makes us want to look the same way, so we spend money on beauty products and treatments to try to achieve that look.

Another reason is that people now link how they look with how they feel about themselves. Taking care of our appearance has become a way to show that we care about ourselves. So, people spend money on beauty things to feel better about themselves and to feel more confident when they’re with others.

Also, in today’s competitive job market, looking good can help in getting a job or moving ahead in a career. People think that if they look well-groomed and polished, it can help them make a good impression during job interviews and at work.

However, spending a lot on beauty care can have some not-so-good results too. It might make people spend more money than they can really afford, causing financial problems. Also, trying to look exactly like the pictures we see can make us feel unhappy and stressed if we can’t achieve that look.

Moreover, using a lot of beauty products can harm the environment. The things we use for beauty, like packaging and chemicals, can pollute the environment and use up valuable resources.

In conclusion, the rise in spending on beauty care by both men and women is because of media influence, the connection between appearance and self-esteem, and the competitive job market. While this can help boost confidence and meet modern expectations, it’s important to understand the potential downsides, like money troubles, feeling bad about oneself, and harming the environment. It’s about finding a balance between taking care of ourselves and being responsible consumers, especially when the pressure to look a certain way is so strong.
