IELTS Writing task 2 – globalisation

Many people say that globalisation and the growing number of multinational companies have a negative effect on the environment. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

The relationship between globalization, multinational companies (MNCs), and their environmental effects is a topic of ongoing discussion. While some argue that these forces have a negative impact on the environment, it is essential to consider both the drawbacks and benefits before drawing a conclusion.

Critics of globalization and MNCs contend that their pursuit of profit often leads to detrimental environmental consequences. MNCs may exploit weaker environmental regulations in certain regions, resulting in activities like deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction. Moreover, the extensive transportation networks required for global trade contribute significantly to carbon emissions and air pollution, contributing to climate change.

Nonetheless, there are positive aspects to consider as well. Globalization fosters the exchange of knowledge and technology, allowing MNCs to disseminate innovative and sustainable practices across borders. This has led to the development and sharing of eco-friendly technologies, waste reduction strategies, and efficient supply chain management techniques.

Additionally, the increasing demand for environmental responsibility has led to a shift in MNC behavior. Companies are now more accountable for their actions and their impact on the environment. Consumer preferences for eco-conscious products and ethical practices have prompted many MNCs to invest in renewable energy sources and commit to reducing their carbon footprint.

In conclusion, the effects of globalization and the activities of multinational companies on the environment are a mixed bag. While concerns over profit-driven environmental degradation are valid, the global exchange of ideas and the growing emphasis on accountability offer avenues for positive change. Striking a balance between economic growth and environmental protection will require collaborative efforts, stricter regulations, and responsible business practices. As we move forward, it is crucial to harness the potential benefits of globalization and MNCs while mitigating their negative impact on our planet.
